As of July 2026 folks that were covered under the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped program were moved to the Alberta Disability Assistance Program.
This new program offers just $1,740 per month compared to the already below poverty and paltry $1,940 per month under AISH. This is over $700 below the poverty line in Albertas major cities.
The Alberta Government is ripping $200 per month out of the hands of SEVERELY HANDICAPPED PEOPLE.
The Alberta government took a disability support program that was already barely keeping people afloat, slapped a new label on it, and called it “reform.” By moving many AISH recipients into ADAP, the province created a two-tier disability system where people may have to prove — again — just how disabled they are, while facing lower benefits once the temporary transition top-up ends. It is the kind of policy where the paperwork gets heavier, the support gets lighter, and the government somehow congratulates itself for “helping people work” while quietly saving money off the backs of people least able to absorb the hit. ADAP: because apparently poverty just needed better branding.
And in almost comedic timing, the Province of Alberta announces a $100 Energy Rebate… or $200 per household. Seems like an oddly familiar amount??
Now… I know we all hurting… but I don’t think most of us are hurting as much as those folks that had $200 a month clawed back from them. So I figured, what if we take this rebate money and make donations to the organizations, groups or charities that are in the best position to help those on AISH/ADAP?
You’ve heard the horror stores about how difficult this application to the Energy Rebate Program is, but perhaps if it is for a good cause it will give you a bit more incentive!
